Theo Zwinderman (1956)

Education: ABK Minerva in Groningen, 1974–1980, free department of graphics and illustration

Theo Zwinderman’s work is highly diverse and colourful, with texts and poetry often playing an important role. For this he uses various techniques, such as: pastel pencil, acrylic paint, alkyd paint, charcoal, watercolour, and collage. He also creates portraits of people and animals, often on commission.

In addition, he writes children’s books, fairy tales, and poems, which he then illustrates himself. In his studio in Veendam he gives various courses and workshops.

The raven

A fast and instinctive creative process of action painting by dripping, splashing, scratching, and smearing paint on an enormous canvas. The work is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s poem ‘The Raven’: an almost abstract chaos of words and sounds.

Jan van IJken filmed the Dutch artist Theo Zwinderman painting ‘The Raven’ and edited the film to the rhythm of a recitation of the poem by George Snow.
